BOURBONNAIS ? The Chicago Bears held their first practice under head coach Marc Trestman today in Bourbonnais, and as expected, it was quite different than those run by former coach Lovie Smith.
For many, the fast pace and the perpetual-motion of it all was a breath of fresh air.
?I think it?s good. It?s getting us in shape, I know that,? safety Chris Conte said. ?It is difficult, but I think it?s good for us.?
Trestman gave a little taste of what his coaching style is like during rookie camp, OTAs and veteran workouts. Friday, however, was the real thing, and Trestman certainly did not tone it down a bit.
His fast-paced practice had no breaks, a lot of whistling and yelling, and plenty of wrinkles thrown in ? he breaks into spontaneous 2-minute drills, and breaks specials teams work into three short phases.
Long inserted early
The new coaching staff quickly inserted rookie first-round draft pick Kyle Long in with the first-team offense, taking only about a half of a practice to do so. Long ? who missed most of the summer workouts due to his college class schedule ? worked at right guard with the first team most of the way after that, and looked sharp, appearing to know the plays throughout.
?I don?t make anything of it,? Long said of his time with the starters. ?I just want to go out and earn every rep. That?s what I?m here to do.?
WRs back in action
Wide receivers Brandon Marshall (hip) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) are back, healthy, and ready to go. And with those two back, the offense had a whole new feel to it. Even though this offense calls for a lot of quick-drop pass plays, those two wideouts still should play big roles. Today was their first extensive action in the new offense.
?It felt pretty good, but at the same time, we?re just building,? second-year receiver Jeffery said. ?It?s the first day of training camp, so guys are going to make their mistakes and you?ve got to learn from it.?
Returns only
Devin Hester is all about punt returns ? finally. The experiment is officially over as Hester did nothing but field punts all day.
Melton slowed by flu
Henry Melton didn?t do much on Day 1, complaining of flu-like symptoms. On the other hand, the coaches were already hard at work with new Bear Jamaal Anderson, who is being looked at as depth on the defensive line, especially after the surprise retirement of Sedric Ellis on Thursday. Anderson signed with the team Thursday.
