Pacino movie films in middle of concert by Chicago

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An Al Pacino movie broke out in the middle of a concert by the band Chicago, with thousands of fans serving as extras.

Cameras were wheeled onstage during intermission of the group's show at the Greek Theatre on Friday night to film a scene from Pacino's upcoming movie "Imagine," in which he plays aging rock star Danny Collins.

With coaching from the director, the crowd chanted the name of Pacino's character as the 73-year-old actor walked on stage to sing "Hey Baby Doll" in a black suit. The movie co-stars Michael Caine, Annette Bening and Jennifer Garner.

"This is an improvisation," Pacino told the crowd. "You just came in and got it. That's not easy."

Chicago's band members remained on stage to watch and clap along during the 25-minute filming. After a few takes, the crowd grew restless and there was scattered booing for the real musicians to resume playing.

Earlier in Chicago's set, Joe Mantegna of CBS' "Criminal Minds" joined his hometown band to sing "If You Leave Me Now."

Pacino returned to the stage during Chicago's encore and sang and danced to their hit "25 or 6 to 4."

"For a shy guy from the South Bronx, this has been great," Pacino said.

Mobile-Focused Ad Tech Startup Run Raises $1.5M From Verizon Ventures

run logoRun, which offers ad-buying tools and analytics, is announcing that it has raised $1.5 million in funding from Verizon's strategic investment arm Verizon Ventures. Co-founder and COO Dan Schwartz said that demand-side platforms (which are used by advertisers to buy ads across multiple ad exchanges and data sources) have mostly taken two approaches when it comes to mobile. First, there are the traditional DSPs that started on desktop and are now looking at mobile. Second, there are startups focused on mobile exclusively. He described Run, on the other hand, as part of "the first crop of ad tech 2.0 companies" and one that's taking a "mobile-first approach" to ad buying while still running campaigns that across devices.

Zimmerman had handgun during recent Texas traffic stop

[Updated at 6:30 p.m. CT]

DALLAS ? George Zimmerman, who was recently acquitted in the controversial shooting death of Trayvon Martin, had a handgun in his truck's glove box when a Texas police officer pulled him over for speeding near Dallas last Sunday, authorities say.

Zimmerman immediately told the Forney, Texas officer he had the gun when the officer approached his door. Earlier reports by a Dallas TV station that the weapon was sitting outside the glove box were inaccurate, said Forney city manager Brian Brooks.

Transporting a gun inside a vehicle's compartment is legal in Texas. Zimmerman's conceal carry permit was re-instated after he was found not guilty, but the gun involved in the death of Martin is now with federal investigators who are conducting their own probe.

The Sunday traffic stop, which was captured on the officer's dashboard camera, lasted about five minutes.

"It wasn't for super-excessive speeds, they just got him on regular speeding," Brooks told Reuters. "It's a pretty routine stop except for the fact that it was George Zimmerman." Zimmerman/Martin (AP/Family)On July 13, Zimmerman was found not guilty in the 2012 shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager in Sanford, Florida. The trial of the onetime neighborhood crime watchman was televised to a wide audience and his acquittal led to nationwide protests and prompted President Barack Obama to speak out on the case.

On the dashcam video, the Texas officer says "What a coincidence" after Zimmerman hands him his license and points out who he is. Asked where he was going, Zimmerman told the officer, "Nowhere in particular."

Zimmerman's legal team declined to answer questions about the traffic stop, but did send out a message on Twitter: "For his safety, we won?t make any comments about Zimmerman?s whereabouts, and we will work to protect his privacy."

Mark O'Mara, his attorney, has previously said that Zimmerman planned to arm himself because of threats against his life.

The officer let Zimmerman off with a warning and sent him on his way.

Budding Scientist Projects: Caterpillar Olympics

Our "caterpillar Olympics" course

My parents have an old birch tree in their backyard in Western Massachusetts. Each August, we watch a new generation of black-and-white? tussock moth caterpillars make its way down from the tree and toward the side of our house to weave cocoons. Last summer, there were so many of these fluffy creatures that they hung down from the trees on their lines of silk like decorations.

This year, we arrived at my parents? place too early to witness the great migration from birch tree to house siding. But we were lucky enough to find one? caterpillar and catch it. In the past, we?ve kept several of them in pickle jars ? with air holes punched in the lid ? and watched as they wove cocoons and turned into moths, then released them. This year, we?re not here long enough to observe the full lifecycle, so we decided to build the caterpillar its own ?Olympic park,? as my 7-year-old daughter calls it, and observe it climbing around. We used the inside of a box top, and built a slide, a seesaw, a tunnel, a ladder, a jungle gym, a bed and other ?equipment? out of paper. We?ve enjoyed watching the caterpillar?s agility as it makes its way around the course, tossing and waving its head from side to side once it reaches the top of a structure, perhaps searching for a higher tree branch to cling on to.?(Warning: Some people are allergic to the hairs on these caterpillars and can develop a rash. We haven?t had this problem, but to stay safe you may want to handle your caterpillars using small sticks or twigs)

Below is a video of our caterpillar on the slide.

Breast-feeding rates up; 77 percent of moms try

(AP) ? Health officials say breast-feeding rates continue to inch up: Now more than 3 in 4 mothers try to breast-feed their newborns.

Breast-feeding rates remain highest in Idaho and lowest in Mississippi. Experts attribute that to regional differences in culture and workplace policies that support breast-feeding.

Wednesday's report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 77 percent of moms tried breast-feeding in 2010. A decade earlier it was 71 percent. The percent still breast-feeding a year later rose to 27 percent from 16 percent in 2000.

The report comes from a national telephone survey of more than 8,000 parents and caretakers of small children.

Experts say breast milk contains antibodies that protect newborns from infections, and breast-fed babies are less likely to become overweight.

U.S. court ends Pemex bribery case against Siemens, SK Engineering

By Erin Geiger Smith

(Reuters) - A U.S. federal judge has dismissed a $500 million lawsuit brought by state-owned Mexican oil company Pemex against Siemens AG and a South Korean company that claimed the defendants bribed Pemex officials to secure oil refinery projects in Mexico.

The case raised novel questions about who is a victim in corruption cases, but U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton of Manhattan did not address that issue, instead ruling Tuesday that Pemex could not bring the lawsuit because it had not shown its claims had enough contact with the United States.

The bribery and racketeering claims made by PEMEX "allege a foreign conspiracy against a foreign victim conducted by foreign defendants participating in foreign enterprises," the judge wrote.

The court could not address such "extraterritorial" claims, Stanton said.

Carlos Gonzalez, an attorney for Pemex, said the company is evaluating the court's decision and considering its options.

Pemex accused Siemens in December 2012 of paying Pemex officials to approve overrun and expense payments to a corporation partly owned by Korea's SK Engineering.

The bribery allegations in the suit were part of a scheme that has dogged the German conglomerate for years. Siemens paid a record $1.6 billion to U.S. and European authorities in 2008 to resolve allegations of bribery around the world, from Iraq to Argentina.

As part of that settlement, the company also pleaded guilty to U.S. criminal charges.

A representative for Siemens could not be reached after business hours in Germany. An attorney for SK Engineering was also not immediately available to comment.

The case is Petroleos Mexicanos et al v. SK Engineering & Construction Co Ltd et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, NO. 12-09070.

Texas House defeats key transportation amendment

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? A proposed constitutional amendment boosting funding for roads and transportation infrastructure by more than $840 annually garnered just 84 votes in the Texas House late Monday, 16 fewer than it needed for approval and likely setting the stage for a third special session.

The lower chamber will convene again Tuesday, the last day of the second extra legislative session, and is expected to reconsider the vote ? but supporters and opponents agreed the outcome appears unlikely to change. Gov. Rick Perry has promised to call lawmakers back yet again if they fail to pass the package of new funding for road and bridge construction.

"It is disappointing that some members of the House today needlessly delayed our state's ability to deal with the added strain our increasing population and surging economy are placing on our roads and highways," Perry said in a statement. He added: "Legislators have been in Austin for nearly seven months now, and to go home without dealing with one of the most pressing issues facing all Texans is simply unacceptable."

The regular, 140-day session ended on May 27 but a state that prides itself on having a part-time Legislature is now facing the prospect of seeing its lawmakers in session 230 days thanks to three, 30-day special sessions.

The Housed needed two-thirds of its 150 members to support the would-be constitutional amendment, which would ask voters in November 2014 to approve the additional spending on transportation.

Experts say Texas needs $4 billion extra in the state budget to maintain the current road network given the state's booming population, but the Republican majority refuses to consider raising taxes.

Instead they have proposed taking an estimated $848 million in oil and gas taxes that would normally flow into the state's cash reserves or Rainy Day Fund. Supporters say that funding will be a good start toward fixing the problem.

But some conservatives opposed the plan, saying the state shouldn't be using its Rainy Day Fund for ongoing expenses. Meanwhile, a number of Democrats opposed it because the funding package might have included a floor for the Rainy Day Fund of $6 billion that would have halted all diversion to transportation if the fund fell below that amount.

Discrepancies between funding proposals passed in the House and Senate, as well as disagreement on the proposed floor, delayed the final vote until Monday. In all, House Democrats voted 26-13 in favor of the amendment, while Republicans supported it 58-27. At least 26 lawmakers were absent from Monday's vote.

The measure's sponsor in the House, Democratic Rep. Joe Pickett of El Paso, said it was so late in the summer that many representatives were absent for the vote. He said the House will move to reconsider Tuesday, but that the prospects appear bleak because many lawmakers will still be absent, and those present are unlikely to change their minds.

"I think it would be pretty difficult," Pickett said. "Very difficult to get bodies that weren't here back in time, or cajole ... others into voting differently."

House Speaker Joe Straus, a San Antonio Republican, said "as today's vote shows, members have become increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of diverting and indefinitely dedicating funds away from the Rainy Day Fund to roads."

"Diverting a capped amount of money from the Rainy Day fund to repair roads is much like using a Band-Aid to cover a pothole," Straus said in a statement. "In the end, you still have a pothole and you've spent a lot of money without solving the fundamental problem."

Funding for roads was set to pass at the end of the first special session but died as collateral damage when Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth filibustered a sweeping bill imposing some of the country's strictest limits on abortion. The Legislature has since passed the abortion restrictions.

With the transportation plan still not passed, Perry has promised to call lawmakers back for another 30 days. From the House floor, though, Pickett implored the governor: "Don't call us back tomorrow."

"Let us relax, let us have a vacation, let us have a summer," he said, adding of next year's election cycle: "Let us get through the primaries and then we can come back."

The Senate, meanwhile, adjourned without voting, but plans to approve the measure by two-thirds on Tuesday. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who oversees legislation there, said of the House: "It is my hope that they will bring this up for reconsideration."

"They are optimistic they can get the votes," Dewhurst said. "But I will leave that to them."
