TechCrunch is reporting that the layoffs will start today.
This move isn't exactly unexpected. When Google first announced its decision to buy Motorola Mobility back in August, 2011, Business Insider noted that Motorola Mobility's huge staff of 19,000 represented 60% of Google's total employees at the time.
Still, the layoffs represent Google's first big change to Motorola Mobility's business since Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of the company was approved earlier this year.
Dennis Woodside, Motorola Mobility's current CEO, told the New York Times that the move is part of a plan to focus the manufacturer's energies on a few cellphones and abandon the many low-end devices it has been producing for years.

The new version of Avaya's conferencing solution ?is now available. Aura Conferencing 7.0 provides session-based, unified ?voice ?and Web collaboration ?for Macs, PCs, tablets and smartphones. Version 7.0 features added flexibility for mobile ?devices and conference calls of all sizes -- making it well-suited for sales presentations and sales meetings, as well as customer ?service training, partner meetings, and other business ?collaborations.
The company also unveiled a new version of its Aura unified communications platform for the Avaya Communication Server 1000, and its Flare Experience for Apple iPad tablets and Windows ?PCs.
Few to a Few Thousand
Aura Conferencing 7.0 is supported by the open , standards-based SIP architecture featured in Avaya 6.2. The company said the new version provides the flexibility companies need in the era of mobile collaboration and bring-your-own-device, offering the ability to video and voice conference between a few co-workers for an impromptu meeting, or a few thousand for a companywide occasion.
Version 7.0's enhancements include one-stop access to Aura conferencing from the Flare Experience, a Collaboration Agent client for access via any Web browser or from Apple's iPhone, and visual and contextual controls for improving the operation of conference sessions. The controls include streamlined ways of announcing or identifying attendees, dealing with background noise, and speaker identification.
Aura allows a conference organizer to scroll through contacts and, via a green dot, see who is participating. Additional participants can be added to the conference by drag-and-dropping their contact info into the conference spotlight. Web-based sharing of content ?can be enabled for any participant, or via a whiteboard feature.
Flare provides access to companywide communications and collaboration tools, offering a single interface ?and directory for a variety of communication ?tools. The tools include conferencing, Web collaboration, directories, contextual history, social media, presence and instant messaging.
On an Avaya Desktop Video Device, which is a multi-touch piece of equipment combining a desk phone, speakerphone, and video endpoint, Flare also offers access to video conferencing.
Bandwidth Management
The new Aura Conferencing also can scale to handle up to 7,500 active conferencing sessions, which can be located almost anywhere. This is accomplished via a distributed open architecture and onboard intelligence to reduce and manage bandwidth usage and consolidate media streams, all of which Avaya said lowers costs.
We asked Jorge Blanco, Avaya vice president for Marketing of Contact Center Solutions, what the company sees as the key enhancements for 7.0.
From the IT ?department's perspective, he cited the cascading architecture, which creates "a very low impact" on the wide area network . Blanco pointed out that the previous version of Aura "still depended on a hardware -based, multipoint architecture," which relied very heavily on the network.
By contrast, he said, 7.0 leverages the cascading technique to move the "hard work," such as transcoding, "as close to the end user as possible."
From the end user's perspective, Blanco pointed to the integration ?of collaboration and communication needs "all into one environment," as opposed to, say, the collaboration-only environment of a WebEx.

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., leaves the House Republican Conference meeting, beginning at the Capitol Hill Club on??
Gov. Mitt Romney is expected to announce Saturday morning that he's chosen 42-year-old Paul Ryan to be his running mate. Since 2008, the well-spoken Republican Congressman from Janesville, Wisconsin has emerged as a leading figure on the right and a champion of reduced government spending.
Ryan has earned the admiration of conservatives for the tough, government-slashing budget proposals he's put forward since becoming chairman of the House Budget Committee last year.?But when he first arrived in Washington as a freshman lawmaker in 1999 at only 28 years old, budget shrinking wasn't exactly in style.
Ryan told the New Yorker that he was "miserable" during the George W. Bush years, when a Republican-majority Congress added $5 trillion to the debt in war spending, bank bailout, tax cuts, and other costs. But Ryan also tended to vote with the majority at that time, though he put forward unsuccessful proposals to privatize Social Security and made other budget-shrinking suggestions.
In 2008, he released his "Roadmap for America's Future," which described his sweeping vision for how to make America's main entitlement programs of Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid solvent. The plan made him a hero among conservative circles, and Ryan eventually remade it as his "Path to Prosperity" plan, which President Obama and Democrats have criticized for embracing tax cuts while cutting government programs that help the poor. (It wasn't just Democrats who criticized Ryan. While running for president, Newt Gingrich called Ryan's plan "right wing social engineering," which probably helped kill Gingrich's bid.)
President Obama actually helped raise Ryan's profile on the right by critiquing the Congressman's budget, and just last year, Ryan was?reportedly mulling his own run for president.
Ryan, an Ayn Rand fan, ably articulates a conservative vision for economic growth; a mark that Romney occasionally misses as he dodges the subject of his own personal wealth. "I think [Obama] looks at the economy as a fixed pie, and that it's government's role and duty to redistribute the slices in the name of equity versus our belief, which is 'Let's just grow the pie' and have an opportunity in our society for upward mobility ? a society defined by upward mobility, not equal outcomes," he told Esquire magazine last year. "Under our view, we want to make sure people can get the opportunity to make the most of their lives, but that necessarily means that under the kind of economic-freedom system that we have had, you will have different outcomes of people's lives. And that's fine."
Ryan, who spent his early political career working for Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback and the late Republican Congressman Jack Kemp, grew up the fourth child in a Roman Catholic family in Janesville that has lived in the town for five generations. He worked in his family's construction business after earning his degree in economics from Miami University in Ohio. His father died when he was only 16, which prompted soul-searching that led Ryan to discover the works of Rand, who is still a major influence on him. He and his wife, Janna Little, have three children.

HONG KONG (AP) ? Hong Kong's economy grew weakly in the second quarter as the simmering European debt crisis cut demand for exports.
The government warned Friday that "downside risks in the global economy continued to loom large." It lowered the full year economic growth forecast to 1-2 percent from 1-3 percent.
The economy grew a "tepid" 1.1 percent in the April-June quarter compared with the year before. On a quarter-to-quarter basis, the numbers were even worse and showed the economy shrank 0.1 percent.
Exports declined, with Europe the weakest market. Shipments to Europe fell at a double-digit rate.
Hong Kong is a semiautonomous region of China. It's a major Asian financial center with open markets and a busy port handling a big share of goods from China.

TOKYO/BEIJING (Reuters) - Asia's major crude buyers are finding ways around tough U.S. and EU sanctions to maintain imports from Iran, suggesting that, for now, the worst may be over for the OPEC producer that is losing more than $100 million a day in oil export revenues.
China, India, Japan and South Korea buy most of the one million barrels per day of crude Iran is able to export despite financial, shipping and insurance sanctions aimed at curbing funds for its controversial nuclear program.
After a lull in imports in the middle of the year caused by Asian refineries reducing purchases as sanctions kicked in, analysts expect shipments to rise in August and September.
But on average, imports are likely to remain steady until the end of the year, unless the United States and the European Union come up with fresh sanctions to curb Iran's earnings.
"The drop in Iranian oil exports has leveled out over the past couple months at roughly 1 million barrels per day below 2011 levels," said Trevor Houser, a partner at the New York-based Rhodium Group and a former State Department adviser.
"I don't expect shipments to Asia to fall much further during the second half of the year, but don't expect them to increase much either."
At current prices, Iran is losing some $110 million a day in export earnings compared with the start of the year.
Japan more than doubled its August loadings to 7 million barrels compared with July to make up for disruptions through the middle of the year, while India is expected to follow suit and load 2 million barrels at most, industry sources say.
China, Iran's biggest oil customer and trading partner, kept August loadings unchanged from July at 8 million barrels.
The West suspects Iran is building nuclear weapons, which Tehran denies.
INSURANCE SNAGS PERSIST
Even though global markets are awash with crude, Iranian oil has retained its appeal with discounted prices, easier trade financing terms and because its grade of high-sulphur oil is well suited to many refineries.
Earlier this year, the United States granted allies Japan, South Korea and India a waiver from financial sanctions after they reduced purchases from Iran by around 15 percent in the first half of the year from year earlier levels.
China was given a U.S. waiver after imports fell by more than 20 percent during the same period compared to a year earlier due to a dispute over contract terms with Iran.
Imports were hit the most, however, by the EU's ban on providing insurance for Iranian oil shipments. EU insurers underwrite most maritime shipping, and insurers elsewhere have been unable to offer cover for the billions of dollars in claims that could stem from a spill.
The lack of cover prompted South Korea to halt shipments from Iran in July. Its loadings are set to resume in September after Korean refiners decided to follow counterparts in China and India and ask Iran to deliver crude on its own tankers, shifting responsibility to Iran for insurance.
So far, only Japan is providing refiners with government-backed insurance of up to $7.6 billion to ship Iranian oil. India's state-run insurers can provide some limited cover.
Making Iran responsible for insurance is risky in the event of an accident, industry experts say, and using its limited number of oil tankers is not a long-term solution because of new U.S. sanctions that will target the national tanker firm NITC.
"Insurance problems... shipping problems and transportation problems are persisting," said B. K. Namdeo, executive director at Hindustan Petroleum Corp., India's second-biggest refiner.
The International Energy Agency, in its latest report on Friday, estimated exports of Iranian oil had fallen to multi-year lows of 1 million barrels per day in July from 1.74 million in June.
It said there was scope for exports to rise by September, but Iran would continue to face "major difficulties".
RISKY BUSINESS
Sanctions could tighten further as the United States and the European Union try to choke off more Iranian funds. Tougher sanctions while the world economy is slowing down would limit the impact on oil prices.
Brent crude rose to a near four-year high of $128 a barrel in February, largely on worries about the loss of Iranian supplies, but has eased to around $112 as several major oil producers stepped up output just as demand for crude was waning due to the European debt crisis and weakening growth in the United States and China.
"I doubt we've seen the end of pressure on Asian consumers to avoid Iranian crude," said John Vautrain, an independent Bangkok-based energy consultant.
"The concerns about Iranian nuclear and other policies that gave rise to the sanctions are still there and they haven't gone away. Policy has now shifted and is intended to reduce the flow of Iranian oil," he said.
The United States is due to review the waivers it granted Iranian oil buyers in the months ahead, and will only renew them if nations show a consistent decline in purchases.
"A single month is not going to be the deciding factor," U.S. Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman said last month.
The temptation to take on more Iranian crude is strong, but Asian buyers are wary of the political risks. "What's the extra incentive for taking that kind of extra risk? We always like to toe a middle line," said a Chinese trader dealing with Iran, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the subject.
Ken Koyama, a director at the Institute of Energy Economics of Japan, agreed.
"I think Asian buyers will maintain the basic downtrend in imports to balance their own needs with the pressure from the U.S. and Europe," Koyama said.

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? World leaders and mourners are gathering for the funeral of Ghana's late president.
John Atta Mills died last month at the age of 68, five months before he was due to stand for re-election. On Friday, Ghanaians paid their respects as his body lay in state.
Among the dignitaries expected to attend the funeral is U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The country's vice president, John Mahama, is finishing Atta Mills' term. In December, Mahama is expected to face the second-place finisher from the 2008 election, which was the closest in the country's history.
Ghana is regarded as one of the most mature democracies in West Africa, having held two successive handovers of power following elections.

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) ? Tropical Storm Ernesto made landfall Thursday afternoon near the port city of Coatzacoalcos and moved inland while drenching Mexico's southern Gulf, an area prone to flooding.
Ernesto spun over the far southern Gulf of Mexico, across waters dotted with oil rigs operated by the state oil company, after hurling rain across the Yucatan Peninsula but causing little major damage. The government closed its largest Gulf coast port, Veracruz and the smaller ports of Alvarado and Coatzacoalcos.
Coatzacoalcos, a major oil port, already had gotten seven inches (177 millimeters) of rain in the 24 hours before Ernesto's center passed just a few miles (kilometers) away, according to Mexico's weather service. San Pedro in the neighboring state of Tabasco had seen more than 10 inches (273 millimeters).
"It's raining intermittently. It rains, its stops, and then it rains again," said Juventino Martinez, the civil defense chief in Coatzacoalcos. "We have some flooding, some water building up" on streets in lower-lying sections of the city. He said 40 shelters were ready but hadn't been used yet.
Municipal employee Brito Gomez reported water was waist high in some neighborhoods.
About 2,000 army and navy personnel were on stand-by to head to jungled inland mountains to help in rescue work if needed, said Noemi Guzman, Veracruz state civil defense director. Guzman said no flooding had been reported so far at any of the state's many rivers.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm's sustained winds had declined to about 50 mph (55 kph) by late afternoon as it interacted with land. It had grown into a hurricane shortly before landfall Tuesday night near the cruise ship port of Mahahual in Yucatan, but it weakened as it crossed the peninsula. Ernesto then steamed back out into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday night.
The storm was centered about 55 miles (85 kilometers) west of Coatzacoalcos in late afternoon, moving to the west at 10 mph (17 kph) and creating the threat of torrential flooding.
The U.S. hurricane center said Ernesto was expected to produce rainfalls of up to 15 inches in some parts of the mountainous areas of Veracruz, Tabasco, Puebla and Oaxaca, before weakening and dissipating in a day or two.
With many small communities clinging to hillsides in those states, authorities worried about potential flash floods and mudslides.
Soldiers and state police evacuated three communities in Los Tuxtlas due to rising rivers and streams, taking residents to emergency shelters. People in two neighborhoods in the town of Alvarado were also temporarily relocated due to flooding after intensifying rains around the state.
Petroleos Mexicanos, the state oil monopoly, announced it had evacuated 61 workers from a drilling platform and had taken other safety precautions, but it said production had not been affected.
A new tropical depression formed in the tropical Atlantic on Thursday far from land. It was the seventh tropical depression to form in the Atlantic and forecasters said it had maximum sustained winds of 20 mph (32 kph) and was 1,155 miles (1,860 kilometers) east of the Windward islands.
The Atlantic hurricane season got off to an early start and will likely stay busy, producing a few more storms than originally predicted, U.S. forecasters said Thursday.
Forecasters said warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures and wind patterns that favor storm formation mean chances are higher for an above-normal season. However, that is tempered with the expected development of an El Nino weather pattern over the Pacific that may suppress storms later in the season.
In the Pacific, Gilma weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm and was not seen as a threat to land. Early Thursday afternoon, it was about 715 miles (1,150 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, with maximum sustained winds near 70 mph (110 kph).

Sikhs, who wear distinctive clothing as acts of faith, have been on high alert in America since the 9/11 attacks, bracing for violence whenever there is a surge in anti-Muslim rhetoric.?
By G. Jeffrey MacDonald,?Correspondent / August 6, 2012
EnlargeSunday?s shooting rampage at a Sikh house of worship in Oak Creek, Wisc. brought unprecedented violence and attention to a group with only about 600,000 adherents in the United States.

But it wasn?t the first time Sikhs have faced threats or feared the prospect of tragedy.
?Every time there is a moment when anti-Muslim rhetoric fills the news cycle, we brace for violence to break out? against Sikhs, says Valarie Kaur, an interfaith activist and maker of ?Divided We Fall?, a film that documents hostility toward Sikhs immediately after the Sept. 11 attacks.
As acts of faith, Sikhs wear distinctive clothing, most notably turbans on the heads of men.
?When you flip on your TV, most of the images of turbans and beards are associated with Al Qaeda, terrorism, Osama bin Laden and the like,? says?Manbeena Kaur (no relation),?education director for the Sikh Coalition, an advocacy group formed after the 9/11 attacks.??But in real life, 99 percent of the time when you see someone with a turban, that person is going to be a Sikh. That?s a huge disconnect.?
Sikhs have been on high alert for more than a decade as incidents haven?t let up. Since 2001, the Coalition has received more than 700 reports of bias, including two California murders in 2011 and the February 2012 desecration of a Sterling Heights, Mich., gurudwara (house of worship).
What?s more, the group?s surveys find no age group to be exempt. In the San Francisco Bay Area, 12 percent of Sikhs say they?ve faced employment discrimination since 9/11, while 69 percent of turban-wearing Sikh students have suffered bullying or harassment because of their religion.
As world religions go, Sikhism is relatively young. Founded in 1469 in Punjab, India, the faith now counts some 22 million global adherents. That makes it larger than Judaism, which counts about 14 million.
Sikhs, who follow teachings passed down by a series of gurus, or spiritual guides, are defined both by appearance and belief in a single god. Rituals are forbidden, as are cutting and shaving hair. They don?t fast, have no worship attendance requirements, have no clergy, and disavow ?superstition.? They also shun intoxicants, alcohol and tobacco.
In terms of outlook, Sikhs regard all humans as equals. To convey that principle, men take the name Singh and women take the name Kaur. That tenet put them at odds with India?s Hindu caste system from the beginning. Now it rings ironic: Sikhs have long championed equality, even where doing so has been controversial, yet they find themselves targeted for looking different.
Despite the difficulties, maintaining appearances is a crucial part of the religion. By wearing particular clothing, Sikhs signal their religious identities ? and the values represented therein ? even before they open their mouths.
?You are literally wearing your religion on your head,? Manbeena Kaur says. ?You?re wearing it out of commitment to your faith and so you can be easily identified as a Sikh.?
Sikh history in the United States dates to the 1890s, when adherents settled in California and worked, often as farmers or laborers. Later the community branched out to the East Coast, particularly New York and New Jersey. Now Sikhs live in every state, with larger concentrations in such urban centers as Houston and Chicago.
In the years since the Sept. 11 attacks, Sikhs have ramped up advocacy efforts and educational outreach in bids to demystify a little-known religious minority and clear up persistent misconceptions. But they?ve faced challenges, including at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which has rejected a proposed ban on turban pat downs.
Now, Sikh advocates say, the Wisconsin shootings make the need for more education urgent once again.
?Never before has the entire nation turned its attention on the Sikh community,? says Valarie Kaur. ?This is unprecedented, which means we have an unprecedented opportunity for people to learn about Sikhs and reach out to their Sikh neighbors.?

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 ($349.99 direct) ?is a marked improvement over its predecessor, the ZS10. Its lens isn't the sharpest we've seen, but the long-zooming camera does do well at higher ISO settings and features a GPS so you can easily geotag your photos. The 14-megapixel camera doesn't manage to better our current Editors' Choice compact superzoom, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V , but it is less expensive, making it a solid option for superzoom seekers on a budget.
Design and Features
The ZS20 follow the blueprint of most compact superzoom cameras. It measures 2.3 by 4.1 by 1.1 inches, weighs only 7.2 ounces, and has a modest grip on its front. The rear is dominated by a large touch-screen LCD, and there are a good number of controls squeezed into the svelte body. The ZS20 does make one departure in design when compared with its current competition?most other cameras in this class, including the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS ?feature a pop-up flash that hides in the body when not in use. The ZS20's flash is placed right on the front of the camera, next to the grip, so you'll have to be careful not to block it with your finger when shooting.
The lens is a 20x zoom covering 24-480mm (35mm equivalent) range. It isn't the longest in this class, but it is one of the widest. Only the Samsung WB850F ?is wider?its 21x lens starts at 23mm. The 3-inch rear LCD is a touch-screen design with a sharp 460k-dot resolution. You can tap the screen to fire and focus the camera, zoom the lens, navigate through menus, or swipe it to scroll through images in playback mode. It's not as responsive as a smartphone screen, and doesn't support multi-touch gestures like pinch, but is definitely above average when compared with other touch-enabled point-and-shoots. The touch input on the Canon PowerShot Elph 320 HS ?is unresponsive in comparison.
There are a good number of physical controls, including a Mode Dial, a dedicated Movie button, and a button that allows you to quickly adjust EV Compensation. Other shooting settings are adjusted via the Q. Menu, an overlay display that gives you access to White Balance, ISO, Drive Mode, Video Quality, Metering Area, LCD Brightness, GPS, and Image Resolution settings. Other settings must be adjusted via a standard text menu, which must be navigated via the on-camera controls?touch input isn't supported here.
The ZS20's GPS works quite well. It takes about 45 seconds to acquire a signal for the first time. Once enabled, the GPS does try and find at a regular interval when the camera is powered down, so you'll want to turn the GPS off when not using the camera if battery life is a concern. There's also Map functionality with landmarks, so you can see where a photo was taken.
Performance and Conclusions
It takes about 2.3 seconds for the ZS20 to start and take a shot, fires off a burst of 10 photos in just over a second, and records a respectable 0.3-second shutter lag. If you don't mind a slower burst rate, you can shoot at 5 frames per second, grabbing about 17 photos before the camera slows down to about 2 frames per second. The Canon SX260HS is slower in terms of shot-to-shot time, topping out at 2 frames per second, but is able to start and shoot in 1.8 seconds and has a slightly faster 0.2-second shutter lag.
I used Imatest to check the sharpness of photos captured by the ZS20. It is a bit lacking, notching only 1,662 lines per picture height, shy of the 1,800 lines required for a sharp photo. The Samsung WB850F has a much sharper lens?one of the best we've seen in a compact superzoom?it resolves 2,377 lines.
Imatest also checks noise, which can harm image quality and make an image appear grainy at higher ISOs. Noise is kept under 1.5 percent through ISO 800, and image detail holds up very well through that setting. At this setting images look a smidge better than those from our Editors' Choice, the Sony HX30V, although the HX30V has an edge at ISO 1600 and 3200.
Video is recorded in either AVCHD or MP4 format. If you opt for AVCHD you can choose from 1080p60, 1080i60, or 720p60 resolution. You're limited to 1080p30, 720p30, or 480p30 video when you choose MP4 format. Regardless of resolution, the camera does a great job recording footage?it's sharp and bright with autofocus. You can zoom in and out while rolling footage, and there's also a digital zoom that extends the lens beyond its 480mm extreme, without giving up too much in terms of quality. There's a proprietary USB port, which doubles as the charging port?no dedicated battery charger is included?and a mini HDMI port to connect to an HDTV. Standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 may not be the best compact superzoom that we've tested, but it's far from the worst. It leaves a bit to be desired in image sharpness, but it does run neck and neck with our Editors' Choice Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V in high ISO performance. Both cameras have a GPS and support 1080p60 video, but the HX30V, which is $70 more expensive, adds Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi isn't a must, you should also consider the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS. It's priced the same, its lens is sharper, and image quality is comparable through ISO 800, but it's limited to 1080p24 video capture.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A group of investors rescued Knight Capital Group Inc
Chief Executive Tom "TJ" Joyce told Reuters the new investors support him and his management team, but it was too early to tell whether the firm would shrink or keep the same strategy it had before last week's losses.
There were immediate signs the Jefferies Group
Blackstone Group LP
Knight has been the largest U.S. provider of retail market-making in New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq-listed stocks, buying and selling shares for clients. As a market maker it also provides liquidity to equity markets by stepping in to buy and sell stocks, using its own capital to ensure orderly activity.
Knight shares closed down 24.2 percent at $3.07. Those who held Knight shares before Monday will feel the pain of the company's rescue the most acutely. The massive dilution that accompanies the deal means their stakes are worth just a fraction of what they were days ago.
Roger Freeman, analyst at Barclays, said the dilution due to the new investment would imply Knight's value is about $1 a share. He has a $3 price target on the stock, but said it was too early to estimate how earnings would be affected in 2013.
Yet Knight co-founder Kenneth Pasternak told Reuters he had no regrets about accumulating hundreds of thousands of shares in the company since last week's disaster emerged, despite having lost money as a result of Knight's rescue. He retired from Knight in 2002.
BREAKUP COMING?
The rescuing companies will buy preferred stock convertible at $1.50 each with a 2 percent dividend to save Knight, which was left reeling last week by a software glitch that caused errant trading in dozens of stocks. Knight lost money by selling shares it had inadvertently bought during the day.
The preferred shares are convertible into about 267 million common shares, Knight said in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
Jefferies CEO Richard Handler and executive committee chairman Brian Friedman reached out to Knight on Wednesday, the day of the trading snafu, to offer their services, one source directly familiar with the matter said. The person was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly.
Sandler O'Neill had been tapped by Knight to advise on a deal. But by Friday Jefferies was circulating a term sheet to potential investors based on the same deal format that was later announced on Monday, sources said. Jefferies backed the deal by making a principal investment itself.
Unlike many private equity firms that snubbed an approach by Knight, Blackstone took an active interest as it was exploring a buyout of the firm. But Blackstone was told to either join the investor group or walk away, according to one of the sources.
"As a financial investment, Knight is a very valuable firm, but it needed liquidity and if it didn't have liquidity, a lot of that value was going to go away," Getco CEO Daniel Coleman told Reuters in an interview. "So we thought it was a pretty good bet that by providing liquidity we could preserve that value and perhaps increase it."
Getco, nominally a Knight rival, gets a strategic advantage via the deal as well -- an inside peek at a bigger rival that has some lines of business Getco does not.
Stephens Inc Chief Operating Officer Curt Bradbury, in an interview, said he was long-time friends with Joyce and that his firm approached Knight in that vein on Friday. He said that while there may have been some negotiations by others on terms, Stephens was fine with the term sheet as it was presented.
As part of the deal, the investor group will take three board seats. In a regulatory filing, Knight said Blackstone and Getco parent General Atlantic would each fill one seat, while the board will propose a third member acceptable to Jefferies.
Each retains those rights as long as they hold at least 25 percent of the preferred shares they purchased in the deal.
JP Morgan analyst Kenneth Worthington, in a client note after the initial reports of the rescue on Sunday night, said the deal presaged Knight's eventual breakup.
Worthington cited two Knight businesses, the reverse mortgage lender Urban Financial and foreign exchange platform Hotspot FX, as assets that could draw interest, but Joyce said it was too soon to say what would happen to the firm's assets.
"Right now we kind of like our footprint and we will continue to execute on the strategy we had before the error took place, but as we kind of get back to business and do our annual budgeting and strategic reviews at the end of the year, that will be something that we will have to address," he said.
FUTURE STILL UNCERTAIN
Vanguard Group, one customer that pulled orders from Knight last week, said Monday it was again routing there, as did E*Trade Financial Corp
But even if Knight has been saved for now, the company could face litigation from shareholders.
The potential liability could increase if it were found that Knight violated market rules. The SEC, the top U.S. securities regulator, said on Friday that government lawyers were trying to determine whether Knight violated a new rule designed to protect the markets from rogue algorithmic computer trading programs.
According to those people familiar with the matter, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro spoke with Joyce last Wednesday afternoon from her vacation spot in Maine. Joyce brought up rules on erroneous trades during the call and expressed hope for some flexibility. But Schapiro did not convey a view on it during the call, the sources said.
Knight's problems started early Wednesday, when a software glitch flooded the NYSE with unintended orders for dozens of stocks. That boosted some shares by more than 100 percent and left the company holding the shares, causing the trading loss.
DAMAGE SWIFT
The damage to Knight was swift. Whereas Knight once accounted for 20 percent of the market-making activity in shares of Apple Inc , by midday Friday it was the market maker for 2 percent of the volume, according to Thomson Reuters AutEx.
But on Monday, AutEx data showed, that volume was back up to 19.4 percent, and it was on the rise for other stocks as well.
Barclays Capital's Freeman, in a note Monday, said he assumed that Knight's overall volumes in 2013 would be about 15 percent below where they were in the second quarter of 2012.
Sandler O'Neill + Partners and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz advised Knight Capital on the bailout. Barclays Plc

India has in recent months been laying the groundwork to eventually become a major solar market, but the process has gone slower than expected. Sometimes markets develop methodically over many years, and other times they are jolted into urgency. Japan needed a major nuclear crisis to realign its priorities. And now it looks like India received its wake-up call in the form of a massive power outage that affected more than 600 million of its residents.
That in turn has drawn intense media coverage as major new organizations bring focus to India?s structural problems. Many of the stories have focused on the roots and challenges of India?s piecemeal energy system. Others point to the need for a massive overhaul of a grid that has become increasingly incapable of serving the 24/7 need of its growing urban population.
Regardless of where you look in India, solar power has taken a prominent seat at the table for a country eager to continue its economic momentum. And while it?s true that most of the conversation has been about how solar and better infrastructure could provide more stability, much of the new reporting is taking readers to those remote villages where off-grid solar is quietly increasingly quality of life and productivity.
This past week, Mahesh Bhave of the Indian Institute of Management wrote about the need to refocus some of the attention on the role distributed generation plays in creating economic stability.
There are several solar energy solutions. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is mostly focused on using solar energy, like any other fuel source, to feed the grid. Typically, this is through concentrated solar solutions, and recently through photovoltaic panels due to price drops. Solutions that feed power to the grid are important, but they only augment an over-stressed grid ? they do not help the millions without any grid power. The Ministry mostly ignores distributed generation, the solar self-sufficiency solutions like rooftop panels or community grids.

A LOOK AHEAD
A ?Third Way? Approach on U.S.-China Solar Trade: Industry veteran Ron Kenedi presents his thoughts of a ?third way? of moving forward for the benefit of the solar power customer and industry participant: ?Foster collaboration between U.S. and Chinese entities that lead to jointly owned factories in the U.S. that service the domestic market. The Chinese makers want access to the U.S. market and the U.S. market needs investment and the ability to create more jobs. Let the Chinese use Chinese-made cells ? without penalty tariffs ? if deployed in U.S.-assembled modules. Encourage the Chinese solar industry to invest in U.S. factories that produce solar products ?made in the USA.?
Offshore Wind Industry to Take Off in China?s Fujian Province: China's Fujian province, with some of the richest offshore wind power resources in the country, has been a hotspot for domestic wind turbine makers. State-owned firms including Datang Group, China Huadian Corporation and China Longyuan Power, as well as province-level companies such as Fujian Investment and Development Group and Fujian Energy Group, have launched onshore or offshore wind power projects in the area.
Alstom?s Hydro Investment in China:?Alstom, the world's third-largest power equipment maker, is boosting its investment in hydro power in China, as other renewable energy sectors such as wind and solar energy face a slowdown. Alstom Renewable Power, Alstom's division in charge of renewable power generation equipment and services, plans to establish a Global Technology Center in Tianjin, as part of a 100 million euro ($123 million) investment to upgrade Tianjin's hydro industrial facility ? the largest such plant that Alstom has in operation.
