Fruitful matchmaking: Baltic Business Arena is a stepstone to new ...

- I wish there would be more events like this. Especially in the field of clean tech, says Andrzej Kr?l, CEO in Nordpolhaus, one of the SME?s and trade organisations represented at BBA 2012.

It is the first time that SME?s had the opportunity to book face-to-face meetings with other companies at a BDF Summit, but not the last, hopes Andrzej Kr?l. His Krakow-based company is currently exporting its wood frame houses mainly to Norway. He hopes BBA will prove a shortcut to other markets.

?

Perfect mix

The Polish CEO just finished a meeting with Mikael H?kansson from the non-profit organisation European Minds ? a meeting that might prove fruitful Mr. H?kansson says. His office is currently involved in a mining project in Northern Sweden that requires construction of housing for a total 12.000 mine workers.

European Minds is a consulting company offering support in developing EU strategies, EU applications, transnational projects and partnerships.
- We are here to broaden our network to include more first of all authorities but also companies in the Baltic Sea Region, Mikael H?kansson explains.

While he is focusing on the Baltic Business Arena some of his colleagues are covering the political sessions and workshops at the summit. For Mikael H?kansson the whole event constitutes the perfect mix of politics and business.

Business and regional development

Dorota Isajuk also represents a non-profit organisation. She is advisor in the BISNEP (Business and Innovation Support for North-East Poland), addressing the challenges faced by SME?s in the Bia?ystok region in North-West Poland. The Bia?ystok region is one of the poorest regions in Poland and Ms. Isajuk sees events as BBA as a means of boosting economic growth in the region by providing local companies with partners and customers in the Baltic Sea Region.

At BBA Dorota Isajuk has set up meetings with other non-profit organisations, but also companies. She attends networking conferences regularly but is impressed by the BBA event and Swedish innovation company ALMI handling the logistics at Baltic Business Arena.

Stepstone

Artis Treimanis is impressed too. The 21-year-old entrepreneur is representing the small Latvian enterprise Svecu Darbnica specializing in candle making kits.
- I had really good meetings at the Business Arena and a lot of new ideas, Tremanis says.
It is the first time he is attending a matchmaking event and he hopes Baltic Business Arena can become a stepstone on the five employee Ventspils-based company?s road to the Scandinavian markets.
- I guess I represent the smallest company at the business arena. This year, Artis Treimanis emphasizes with an optimistic smile.

BBA 2012 was set up on the initiative of Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket) which is also main sponsor of the event and strategic partner of BDF. The Agency has asked ALMI (Swedish business development organization) and BDF to arrange BBA 2012. Co-sponsors were Enterprise Europe Network, Swedish Institute and BDF.

Activities of BBA 2012 were:

  • Business-to-business meetings
  • Brief thematic seminars presenting topics related to everyday business conditions.

Most participants were SME?s but also business development organizations, legal advisers, innovation agents etc. They came from eight BSR countries: Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.

The first BBA was set up in Stockholm in 2011 when 70 companies from 11 countries performed over 350 meetings.

Karin Hallerby, Head of Dept. at Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket): ?The Baltic Sea Region offers attractive market opportunities for many SME?s. A developed cooperation between SME?s will further strenghten the competitiveness of the region?

?The Baltic Sea Region is performing well in Europe regarding growth and competitiveness?, adds BDF Chairman Hans Skov Christensen. ?Our business structure is dominated by SME?s and dynamic entrepreneurs. Their engagement in establishing new contacts and business opportunities across the Baltic Sea is crucial for the further development of our region?, he emphasizes.

?The best way to exploit and develop cooperation opportunities is to establish personal contacts. In a globalized, digitalized world we are still dependent on personal contacts to take the first step?.

?Especially within green growth this region has global top competences, not least due to traditions of public-private cooperation. BDF is established to facilitate such co-operations? says Torben Aaberg, Head of Public Affairs and BDF?s coordinator of BBA 2012. ?This year we have been very pleased with the close cooperation with ALMI and Tillv?xtverket, the latter being one of our most important Swedish partners. We hope that we together can continue and further develop Baltic Business Arena as an annual event?.

  • BBA 2012 was initiated ? and mainly sponsored by ? Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket) and arranged by ALMI and BDF. Co-sponsors: Enterprise Europe Network, Swedish Institute and BDF.
  • The following contributed to the content of BBA 2012: Magnusson Law Firm, GlobeEight, SKOK Poland, Danish Trade Council, Vaeksthus Greater Copenhagen

Flashpoint drags HTC into yet another patent dispute

Taiwanese handset maker HTC Corp. has been caught up in yet another of the patent complaints that are dogging an increasingly litigious technology industry.

HTC said Wednesday that Flashpoint Technology Inc. of the U.S. has filed another patent-infringement complaint against HTC with the U.S. International Trade Commission. In a similar matter last year the commission ruled against the Peterborough, New Hampshire-based imaging technology company's allegations.

HTC is also named as a respondent in patent disputes with Nokia Corp. The U.S. International Trade Commission is investigating allegations leveled by Nokia that the Taiwanese handset maker's products infringe the Finnish company's patents. Nokia said in early May that it filed several patent-infringement claims against HTC with the U.S. trade body and with courts in the U.S. and Germany.

HTC has been involved in legal disputes with industry giant Apple Inc., too. Following a complaint by Apple, the ITC has since April 19 declared that all HTC handset shipments to the U.S. be inspected and cleared by U.S. Customs. This delays HTC hardware getting to market.

While companies are trying to protect their patents with trade actions, they are also using legal avenues to prevent rivals from getting ahead amid fierce competition, according to industry analysts.

According to Flashpoint's filing posted on the ITC website, Flashpoint alleges certain HTC electronic-imaging devices infringe its patents. Flashpoint is seeking cease and desist orders against HTC from the ITC, the document added.

The document also names Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. as respondents in the complaint, according to the document. Both ZTE and Huawei couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

While HTC confirmed in a statement that the U.S. trade body commenced looking into the complaint June 25 it added nothing more, saying it doesn't comment on continuing legal proceedings."

To help insulate itself from patent complaints HTC has said it will consider buying software-technology companies.

HTC is up against competition from Apple and Samsung Electronics Co, while also being challenged by emerging Chinese players like Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. which offer advanced smartphones at lower prices.

Justin Bieber, Usher Vie To Top Billboard Chart

Bieber's Believe enters charts just one week after his mentor's Looking 4 Myself, as Usher tells MTV News, 'We support each other.'
By Christina Garibaldi

For the past several years, Usher has been helping his protégé Justin Bieber become an international pop star. The pair have collaborated on songs and onstage, but now they are about to have their first battle — on the charts.

Usher's album, Looking 4 Myself, debuted on top of the Billboard albums chart, becoming his fourth #1 album after selling 128,000 copies in its first week. But now it's Bieber's turn: Just one week later, Bieber will be entering the charts with his third studio album, Believe and early predictions are expecting huge album sales.

According to Billboard, Believe is on course to sell between 410,000 and 440,000 units, which would make it the year's biggest debut to date.

Even though Bieber is on track to beat his mentor in sales, the R&B superstar isn't concerned.

Regarding whether he and Bieber speak about topping each other on the charts, Usher told MTV News, "Actually, we have not had that conversation. We try to calculate when we release so that we support each other. It's like a seesaw: 'You take it this week; I'll take it this week.' "

Usher also said that even though he and Bieber do not appear on each other's albums, he was still heavily involved in each song that made the cut on Believe.

"We talked about many different things when making his album. The coolest part about it is we support each other regardless if I'm on the album or he's on my album or not," Usher said. "Every album, it is that sit-down that we have to have, to go through this record. We talk about the audiences that are there: This song is for this audience member, this song is for this region. And that's always very helpful."

Bieber shared during "MTV First: Justin Bieber" that he still turns to Usher for sound advice.

"He's just giving me the advice of: Always keep the people that were there at the beginning and keep them with you, because those are the people that really care and they want to see you succeed."

Do you expect Justin Bieber to top Usher on the charts? Sound off below!

Drake Moves Past Bar Brawl With Help From The Weeknd, Dipset

Drake brushes off Chris Brown drama at New York show with all-star lineup including A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes and 2 Chainz.
By Nadeska Alexis

The Weeknd and Drake perform at New York's Jones Beach on Saturday
Photo:

WANTAGH, New YorkDrake hit the stage at the Nikon Theater in Jones Beach on Saturday night for his first public appearance since the now-infamous club brawl with Chris Brown, and except for a passing reference to the incident, the show went on with extra fuel from special guests like the Weeknd and Dipset.

After opening sets from French Montana, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Waka Flocka Flame and J. Cole, Drake kicked things off with his Take Care tracks "Lord Knows" and "Underground Kings." He formally introduced his crowd to the "greatest club in the world," and assured them that no afterparty could measure up to what he had in store for the night, since he'd brought out "every single n---a that you wanna hear."

Cue "Crew Love" and an appearance from Drizzy's Toronto pal the Weeknd, who momentarily sent the crowd into a frenzy, as the first in a chain of surprise guests. In addition to summoning Waka, Meek, 2 Chainz and French Montana back to the stage for features, Drake also brought out his Cash Money labelmate Busta Rhymes to perform the throwback "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See," while A$AP Rocky and his mob dropped in as well.

It wasn't until Drake performed his soul-baring single "Marvin's Room" that he finally made a blatant reference to the controversy surrounding the Chris Brown incident. He told the audience that he was in a great mood, despite the last few nights being difficult. Once he got that off his chest, he continued the show with an appearance from Jamaican dancehall star Mavado, who performed his own single "I'm So Special."

Despite earlier rumors that Drake might be arrested before the end of the night, ?the YMCMB rapper was calm and cool, focused only on delivering a night to remember. He saved his biggest stunt for the final minutes of the show, bringing Jim Jones onstage to perform his hit "We Fly High," followed by Juelz Santana with "Dipset (Santana's Town)" and finally, Cam'ron. If having A$AP's crew on the bill wasn't enough shine for Harlem, Drake managed to get all three members of Dipset on stage with him for a memorable moment as they performed "Salute."

While details are still being revealed about the club altercation Wednesday night, Drake did his best to brush off the drama and stay focused on the music. This weekend, MTV News caught up with Cash Money CEO Birdman in Atlanta, where he threw his full support behind Drake. "To me, Drizzy ain't did nothin' wrong, he ain't done nothin' wrong to nobody," Birdman said. ?"He just doin' great music. He's not a reckless guy out there just wildin' out; he's a humble kid makin' great music."

Dempster dominates again, Cubs beat Red Sox 3-0

(AP) ? Ryan Dempster realizes his days with the Chicago Cubs could be winding down, particularly if he keeps this up. He's dominating, and a contender just might want him.

Dempster pitched four-hit ball over seven innings, and the Cubs hung on to beat team president Theo Epstein's former club, topping the struggling Boston Red Sox 3-0 on Friday.

"I'm not naive," Dempster said. "I'm not oblivious to what's going on."

The Cubs are in the early stages of their rebuilding process, and he could help a team eyeing the playoffs.

In his 15th season in the majors and ninth with the Cubs, Dempster has the right to veto any trade. He also has an expiring contract, and he's pitching as well as ever.

"If I focus on that, I wouldn't be doing a very good job as a teammate, and I wouldn't be doing a very good job for myself if I wasn't focusing on what I need to do," Dempster said.

He sure was locked in on Friday, yet the Cubs had to hang on in the ninth.

The Red Sox loaded the bases against Carlos Marmol, but he got out of it when Dustin Pedroia forced the runner at third to end the game. That gave Marmol three saves in five chances and the Cubs a dramatic win after they cruised through the first eight innings.

Dempster (3-3) stretched his scoreless innings streak to 22 and lowered his ERA to 2.11 with another dominant performance.

He was at it again after shutting down Milwaukee and Minnesota. This time, the right-hander struck out three and walked two while winning his third straight start after going 18 in a row without a victory.

Dempster also helped himself at the plate with two hits. He won a $500 bet with Tony Campana when he came through with his second career triple past a diving right fielder Adrian Gonzalez and scored in the second to make it 3-0 after Steve Clevenger hit a two-run, bases-loaded double off Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2) in the first.

The bet with Campana? Who would get a triple first this season.

"I thought it was the easiest bet I ever made," said Campana, the Cubs' fastest runner and the majors' leader in steals with 23.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

"Everyone's trying," Pedroia said. "We're not playing good. Today, we didn't play good."

In his second start after Tommy John elbow surgery, Matsuzaka gave up three runs and four hits in six innings before being lifted for a pinch hitter. He walked three ? all in the first ? but eventually found his rhythm.

The Red Sox simply didn't give him much support.

They had runners on second and third against Dempster with two out in the seventh, but Pedroia lined to right to end the threat, slamming his helmet in disgust.

Things got tense in the ninth with Marmol on the mound.

Third baseman Luis Valbuena made a diving stop on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's hard smash to rob him of a hit leading off. But after Ryan Sweeney singled, he misplayed Mike Aviles' grounder, putting runners on first and second.

Marmol, back in the closer's job after losing it, then struck out pinch hitter Daniel Nava but walked Scott Podsednik to load the bases, drawing a visit from manager Dale Sveum. He fell behind 2-0 to Pedroia before getting him to bounce to third on a 2-2 pitch to end the game, giving Marmol his first save since May 2 against Cincinnati.

"I feel great up there now," Marmol said. "I feel confidence. I think I'm going to keep my job. I'm going to continue to work hard."

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was confident, too ? that Pedroia would come through.

"I thought Dustin was gonna get him," Valentine said. "I'll take my chances any time, even though you'd rather not be down three in the ninth any time, but that's the guy to break him, the ball just hit off the end of the bat."

Much of the focus before the game centered on Epstein. After all, the Cubs were meeting the Red Sox for the first time since he became Chicago's president of baseball operations in the offseason.

The Cubs brought him in hoping he could lead them to their first championship since 1908, after he helped build two title winners and end a long drought in Boston as the Red Sox's general manager.

Clearly, he's facing a difficult task.

The Cubs have the majors' worst record. The Red Sox have had their issues, too, and the losses are adding up.

NOTES: Red Sox RHP Josh Beckett will miss Sunday's start because of inflammation in his right shoulder, Valentine said. Lefty Franklin Morales will start in Beckett's place. ... Sveum said he'll probably stick with Valbuena, who was promoted from Triple-A Thursday with Ian Stewart (left wrist) going on the 15-day DL. "He was swinging the bat real well down there, so you try to keep that left-handed bat in the lineup," Sveum said. ... Jeff Samardzija starts Saturday for Chicago, with Jon Lester going for Boston.

Iowa GOP may debate ?birther? plank at state convention June 16

Iowa Republicans will meet June 16 to elect delegates to their national convention and debate whether candidates, such as President Obama., should have to prove their citizenship before being nominated.

Gov. Terry Branstad

A proposed plank in the Iowa GOP platform calls for presidential candidates to ?show proof of being a ?natural born citizen? of the United States? before their name is placed in nomination.

The plank came up from the grassroots, from the local precinct caucuses, according to Don Racheter, chairman of the platform committee. It?s an acknowledgement that many Republicans think Obama is not a ?natural born citizen? because his father was Kenyan. Some people believe Obama doesn?t meet the constitutional requirements to serve as president.

Racheter conceded the plank is a ?shot? at the Democratic president who is seeking a second term.

Sen. Chuck Grassley

Another plank that may provoke a spirited debate calls for state party officials to remain neutral in primaries. Several members of the State Central Committee publicly backed candidates in the 2012 precinct caucuses. Some party members feel that is inappropriate, Racheter said.

Overall, the proposed platform reflects many of the positions promoted by GOP presidential hopeful and Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul. Many of his backers pushed the planks at their caucuses as well as county and district conventions.

Approximately 2,500 delegates are eligible to participate in the convention which convenes at 9:30 a.m. at ?Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.

The Iowa Democratic party also will be having its state convention in Des Moines June 16. Democrats will meet at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center (Vets Auditorium).

Much of the business of the convention, such as electing a slate of 13 national convention delegates, is perfunctory. The proposed national convention delegates are: Gov. Terry Branstad, Boone; Margaret Stoldorf, Montgomery; Sen. Chuck Grassley, Butler; Michelle Bullock, Polk; James Mills, Floyd; Steve Anders, Pottawattamie; Roger Leahy, Jefferson; Mark Hansen, Pottawattamie; Will Johnson, Dubuque; Lexy Nuzum, Madison; Andrea Bie, Allamakee; David Fischer, Polk; and Drew Ivers, Hamilton.

The will join 12 delegates ? three from each of the four congressional districts ? who will be elected on Friday night. All told, Iowa will send 28 delegates to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., in August.

Also on Saturday, the convention will elect Iowa?s members of the Republican National Convention. Steve Scheffler of West Des Moines is seeking another term, but is being challenged by David Chung of Cedar Rapids. Rep. Kim Pearson of Pleasant Hill is the only announced candidate for national committeewoman. The current member, Kim Lehman is not seeking re-election.

Many of the state?s top GOP elected officials ? Branstad, Grassley and other congressional and statewide officeholders ? are scheduled to speak to the convention.

For more on the convention, including the proposed platform, visit http://iowagop.org/pdf/convention_tabloid.pdf.
