Microsoft joins Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium to develop new DRAM standard

Microsoft joins Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium to develop new DRAM standard

Intel unveiled its Hybrid Memory Cube at IDF late last year, and there's already an alliance dedicated to standardizing and implementing the technology. Now Microsoft wants in on the action: the outfit just announced that it will lend its clout to the Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium. To jog your memory, HMC technology promises seven times the efficiency of current DRR3 memory modules and is being vaunted by Intel et al. as the solution for monster systems requiring lower power usage and higher bandwidth. Redmond's joining a well-attended party; IBM, Micron, Samsung and many others are already members of the consortium.

Jerry Sandusky wants Pa. sex-abuse trial postponed

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's lawyer on Wednesday asked for a delay in the former Penn State assistant football coach's child sex-abuse trial, saying he needed more time to prepare and that he was still waiting for disclosure of prosecution material.

In a 13-page motion, defense attorney Joe Amendola wrote that without more time, he was worried he would be "unable to effectively and adequately" represent Sandusky. Amendola said he was still waiting for material from prosecutors.

Judge John Cleland has previously indicated he was reluctant to push back the trial, currently scheduled to begin June 5 in Bellefonte. A hearing on defense subpoenas and pretrial discovery disputes between the defense and prosecutors was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

It wasn't immediately clear if Cleland could, or would, rule on the new motion at the hearing.

A spokesman for the state attorney general's office declined to comment. Cleland has imposed a partial gag order on lawyers in the case.

Sandusky, 68, is confined to his State College home to await the start of his trial on 52 criminal counts involving 10 boys over 15 years. Sandusky has denied the allegations.

Amendola told the judge that he has made 50 requests for records or other material from the attorney general's office and has not received a response concerning the most recent 14 requests.

In a separate motion, Amendola asked Cleland to direct prosecutors to provide paper copies of computer records he has been given, including phone records taken from the office of former Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

Amendola said in the delay request that the defense team needs more time to find and interview witnesses, and that pending criminal charges against two potential witnesses, Penn State administrators Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, have made them unavailable as witnesses in June.

Lawyers for Curley, the school's athletic director now on leave, and Schultz, the retired vice president who supervised campus police, have indicated their clients will invoke their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and refuse to testify if called.

The primary topic of Wednesday's hearing was expected to be the use of defense subpoenas, as school districts and government agencies have asked him to throw them out.

Challenges to defense subpoenas have been filed by three central Pennsylvania school districts, two county child welfare agencies, Juniata College and three state agencies.

It's not clear how many pretrial discovery conflicts still exist between the two sides. Prosecutors on Monday filed a court document telling Cleland that much of the material sought by Sandusky has already been provided and that dozens of other requests are not subject to mandatory disclosure.

The charges against Sandusky concern his relationships with boys he met through his charity for at-risk kids, The Second Mile, between 1994 and 2008. Prosecutors allege Sandusky groomed the boys for sexual abuse, offering gifts and access to the team in addition to companionship.

At least some of the alleged abuse happened in the Penn State football team's facilities, prosecutors said. One of the alleged attacks was witnessed by former receivers coach Mike McQueary, then a graduate assistant.

The ensuing scandal led to the firing of Paterno and the ouster of university President Graham Spanier.

John Travolta Accused of Sexual Battery, Harassment By Second Masseur

A second masseur with allegations of sexual battery and harassment has come forward against John Travolta. But does either accuser have any merit?

The second plaintiff suing the actor is represented by Pasadena, Calif., attorney Okorie Okorocha, who also reps the original John Travolta accuser.

Both have chosen to remain anonymous, at least for now.

Accuser #2 claims Travolta engaged in improper behavior during a massage session at an Atlanta-area resort, according to legal documents.

In response to the new filing, Travolta's lawyer, Marty Singer, responded: "This second 'anonymous' claim is just as absurd and ridiculous as the first one."

"The attorney who filed the lawsuit on behalf of his second anonymous client, who does not want to disclose his name although he is required to do so, was notified that his first client's claims were totally false and fabricated."

"Our client was not in L.A. when anonymous 'John Doe #1' claims he interacted with [Travolta]," says Singer, who has adamantly denied the claims.

The accusers' attorney, Okorocha, responded to People:

"The reason my clients wish to remain anonymous is because the public passes judgment on sexual harassment accusers and people who file lawsuits in general."

"As for evidence, I don't want to show my cards at this time," says Okorocha, who claims to have "so much evidence" to support the claims against Travolta, including witnesses and photos of the actor in Atlanta at the time.

The sexual assault of the masseur purportedly took place in a bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel in January 2011, where Travolta says he never was.

"Before the attorney for the two anonymous plaintiffs filed the claim on behalf of the second person ... it is obvious that he checked media reports that my client was in Atlanta working on a movie," Travolta's attorney adds.

"The claim by Doe #2 is just as fabricated as the claim by Doe #1. Our client will be fully vindicated in court on both of these absurd, fictional claims."

The plaintiffs are seeking $2 million in damages each.

Anti-WiFi Wallpaper Available Next Year

hypnosec writes with good news for folks who want to live in a Faraday cage. From the article: "A new type of wallpaper, which has been developed by scientists from the institut polytechnique Grenoble INP and the Centre Technique du Papier, will go on sale in 2013 after a Finnish firm, Ahlstrom acquired the license. What looks like a bog standard wallpaper roll actually contains silver particles that allows it to filter out up to three different frequencies simultaneously. It is not the first time that such a technology has surfaced. Back in 2004, BAE Systems was tasked by Ofcom to come up with a similar solution based on what was then called a stealth wallpaper. It used copper instead of silver and blocked Wi-Fi signals while letting GSM, 4G and emergency calls through. Back then though, a square meter cost ?500 whereas the Wi-Fi wallpaper devised by the French researchers should be priced reasonably, with costs matching those of a "classic", mid-range wallpaper according to M. Lema?tre-Auger, from Grenoble INP."

Samsung, reigning smart phone champ, preps Galaxy S III

The Galaxy S III is set to debut in the US in June. What will it mean for Samsung??

Yesterday, Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy S III, a svelte new smartphone equipped with a?4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, a?1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor, and a June launch date. ?

In a hands-on preview posted at Engadget, Mat Smith faulted Samsung for not upping the design quotient ? the Galaxy S III looks not so different from other Samsung phones ? but praised the display and predicted that the snappy processor which should help the Galaxy S III "spar for top spot among Android devices." So hey, what will the Galaxy S III mean for Samsung??

Well, here's where things get interesting. According to a recent report from IDC, Samsung currently owns the biggest slice of the global smartphone market, besting even Apple, its closest competitor. In the first quarter of 2012, Samsung sold a whopping?42.2 million smartphones, compared to the 35.1 million sold by Apple. (As one reporter has pointed out, "every second smartphone sold across the world [now comes] from either Samsung or Apple.")?

But that doesn't mean that Samsung is necessarily earning more than Apple. Over at CNET,?Asymco analyst Horace Dediu tells Lance Whitney that worldwide smartphone operating profits are split between only two major players: Apple, with 73 percent, and Samsung, with 26 percent. HTC, in third place, gets 1 percent of the pie. That means that everyone else is either losing money or fighting over a rounding error.?

The reason Apple makes so much money off the iPhone? Carrier subsidies,?Dediu?says. The iPhone helps carriers stay "competitive," CNET reports, and the carriers are willing to pay a premium for that privilege.?

"Following this value proposition to its logical conclusion would suggest that the industry is rewarding those who can supply computers-as-phones which preserve the cash flows of what is essentially a trillion dollar data services business," Dediu says. "Vendors which cannot offer this solution saw their businesses implode. At least on the high end."

And herein, we return again to the Galaxy S III, which has already inspired an iPhone-worthy puddle of drool. If Samsung can succeed in making its new device a "must-have," as the Apple smartphone is now, it could also start to rack up the kind of carrier subsidies currently enjoyed by Team Cupertino. It's a long shot, of course, but if there's one Samsung phone that could do it, it's the Galaxy S III.?

Myspace settles privacy probe with FTC

(AP) ? Myspace, the once-mighty social network ultimately toppled by Facebook, settled a privacy investigation by the Federal Trade Commission and agreed to submit to privacy audits over the next 20 years.

The settlement, over charges that Myspace misrepresented its privacy policies to users, is similar to deals the FTC struck previously with Facebook Inc. and Google Inc.

The FTC said Tuesday that despite telling users it would not share personally identifiable information with others, Myspace gave advertisers users' "Friend ID" numbers. That allowed advertisers to find users' publicly available personal information, often including full names, and could even lead advertisers to discover users' web-browsing activity.

In the settlement, Myspace agreed not to misrepresent its privacy policies. It also agreed to implement a comprehensive privacy program and to submit to regular, independent privacy assessments for two decades.

Myspace, launched in 2003, was a popular Internet destination for years. But the social network was beaten by Facebook.

News Corp., which had bought Myspace for $580 million in 2005, sold it to Specific Media last year for $35 million. Specific Media, based in Irvine, Calif., is an online ad network operator.

In a statement, Specific Media said it settled to "put any questions regarding Myspace's pre-acquisition advertising practices behind us." It said it had conducted a thorough review of Myspace's advertising practices and privacy safeguards following the acquisition and had "successfully improved upon Myspace's historical practices, bringing the social media platform to the forefront of industry best practice for ad delivery."

In March 2011, the FTC settled with Google over charges that it deceived users and violated its own privacy policy when it launched a social-networking service called Buzz. The settlement requires Google to obtain user consent before sharing consumer information with third parties if it alters a service to use the data in a way that would violate its existing privacy policy.

In November, the FTC reached a settlement with Facebook. The company committed to getting explicit approval from its users ? a process known as "opting in" ? before changing their privacy controls.

Both settlements, like that with Myspace, called for independent audits every other year for 20 years.
